5 tips on how to maintain your fire pump

A fire pump is part of a fire sprinkler system, it maintains equal pressure at each sprinkler head in the system. It’s difficult to know if there is a problem with your sprinkler system as they aren’t run regularly. This is why you need to take the time to maintain and inspect the fire pump.

Power source
The power source from which your fire pump is run needs to be checked at least twice a year. Whatever power source you use needs to be cycled every six months. Cycling the power source means that you can inspect the system when its running and you can maintain good lubrication in the system. This also assures that there is always fuel available for the power source.

Move parts
All the parts of the fire pump need to be moving freely. Take some time to move the parts and inspect how freely they move. Without proper maintenance, different parts can lock into place which is a major safety risk.
Lubricate

A fire pump should last for many years however this is only possible if it is properly maintained. When inspecting the parts, lubricate the moving parts while moving them about gently to ensure that they do not lock in place.
Test

Test your sprinkler heads that should be able to trigger the system. Silence the alarm as not to trigger your employees and conduct the test after notifying the fire department of the test. You also need to test the water flow of the pump.

Full unit inspection
A full unit inspection is important to ensure that the fire pump is in good working condition. Inspection is required to establish repair require such as leaks and broken controls.
